Welcome to our last newsletter of 2023. This has been a very special year for AmCham Latvia as we celebrated our 30th anniversary with gratitude, pride, and confidence. With 44 events, over 50 meetings, 40 speakers, and 2500 participants, it has been a truly remarkable year. We welcomed 17 new members and promoted 5 advocacy topics. Thank you to our dedicated Board members, working group representatives, partners, speakers, and most importantly, our members! We look forward to another spectacular year ahead and wish you a happy, peaceful, and prosperous New Year!

AmCham raises over €8850 for charities in 2023
|
|
In 2023 we raised more than €8850 for the following charities: The Children's Hospital Foundation, Latvian Foster Family Association, Pink Train Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities Latvija, and SOS Children’s Villages. As a result of members' donations, the charities will be able to promote the healthy development of Latvia's children and their rights to grow up in a family environment as well as support women affected by breast cancer. Let's continue to support the great work to improve the health and well-being of Latvia's women and children! Read more

Strengthening U.S.-Latvia bilateral relations
|
|
On December 13, members were honored to meet Christopher Robinson, U.S. Ambassador to Latvia who shared his insights on the U.S.-Latvia bilateral relations and the future of transatlantic partnership and security in these challenging times. According to the Ambassador, areas of improvement include accessibility to banking services, energy security, investment in education, R&D, and a skillful workforce as well as continuing the fight against corruption. What can we expect from 2024?
|
In an op-ed featured in Delfi Versijas AmCham Latvia's President and Executive Director share perspectives on the trends shaping economic growth, as well as the major opportunities and challenges in 2024 and beyond. Tremendous opportunities lie in the implementation of sustainable solutions, advancement of digitalization, and acceleration of the development of knowledge-intensive industries and high-value manufacturing, however, future success will depend on coordination, effective governance, and access to talent and investment. AmCham calls for a focus on economic security
|
On December 4, AmCham launched its recommendations calling to prioritize foreign direct investment and increase national competitiveness to ensure economic security and well-being. In a difficult geopolitical environment, Latvia's priorities are undoubtedly to increase investments in security and defense, however, ensuring economic security is equally important for Latvia’s national security and future economic growth. Maintaining existing and attracting new investments from key strategic partners such as the United States is essential, which is why AmCham continues to speak to a sustainable and transparent business environment and strong human capital. AmCham representatives meet the Minister of Finance
|
On December 14, the AmCham representatives met with Arvils Aseradens, Minister of Finance to discuss balancing the tax burden for foreign and resident private investors as well as to introduce him to the recent AmCham recommendations "Increasing investments and competitiveness for Latvia’s economic security" The discussion took place as part of the Minister's visit of MikroTik. On December 12, Investment work group members gathered for a work group meeting to look back at activities of 2023, review the latest AmCham recommendations, and plan support activities to foster investment flow to Latvia. The group also discussed priorities for 2024. Read more

The role of investment and trade in fostering economic security
|
In the latest Baltic Rim Economies publication, AmCham's Executive Director looks at how the economic partnership with the U.S. can strengthen Latvia's economic security. "More should be done in prioritizing the U.S. as a full-range partner, including from the economic perspective. The willingness to proactively promote U.S. investments is a small but important step on the road to unlocking immense opportunities that hold promise not only for accelerated economic growth but, even more importantly, could considerably contribute to our common security." Digitalization of healthcare in Latvia: why, how and for whom?
|
In a new op-ed featured in LSM, AmCham's Digital Health WG representatives Kadi Lubi, Kristaps Krafte, and Ieva Dzirkale stress the importance of digitalization in and of healthcare. Latvia, like all Western welfare countries, is an aging society, which means not only an increase in the number of patients but also a decrease in healthcare professionals and in order to keep the healthcare system functioning, there is a need for people – whether they are healthcare professionals, patients, or carers – to be equipped with tools as well as skills, knowledge, and a favorable attitude. Luminor receives best ESG rating in Baltics
|
|
For the second year in a row, Luminor has received the best environmental, social responsibility and governance (ESG) risk rating determined by Morningstar Sustainalytics among the largest banks in the Baltic States – 12.4. Luminor was also ranked 61 out of 1,009 banks worldwide. PwC invites you to participate in the annual PwC’s Baltic CEO Survey to share your views on business opportunities and threats, growth prospects, and labor availability. The survey aims to find out how business leaders assess the business environment in the Baltics and how they adapt and transform their companies to ensure the sustainable development of their businesses. RSU receives award for growth in sustainable governance

|
On 6 December, Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) received a special award for growth at the Latvian Sustainable Governance Awards 2023 ceremony at the Bank of Latvia. RSU was praised for its contribution to sustainable governance and growth, as well as for improving corporate governance and ensuring that the University's activities are in line with the defined values. This time, they were on a mission to fill charity boxes with joy and warm feelings for the little ones to have a brighter festive season. Furthermore, they were united by a cause - "Team is a Force". The EU Corporate Sustainability Directive is a new law that requires organizations to report sustainability information on an annual basis. Swedbank's guide "Step by step towards sustainability" is expected to help companies gain a better understanding not only of reporting but also of forward-looking management of its impact, risks, and opportunities. Future Changemakers Academy
|
|
Riga Business School (RBS) invites AmCham members to support their new program "Future Changemakers Academy" which will be aimed at developing the leadership skills of secondary school students. The focus of the program will be on incentivizing students to choose careers in FinTech, HealthTech, and GreenTech. Read more
