Key takeaways of the EU-US summit
|
|
The EU-U.S. Summit was a historical milestone in announcing concrete cooperation in a number of areas, including aircraft subsidies, technology, climate, taxation and vaccines. The outcome of the summit underscores the determination of the EU and the U.S. to shape the global economy’s future direction around the values of democracy, rule of law, open trade and fair competition. Among one of the most significant announcements was an agreement on the aircraft disputes, accompanied by a pledge to suspend application of USD 11.5 billion in tariffs.

AmChams call on easing restrictions on transatlantic travel

As part of AmChams in Europe U.S. Week: Washington DC Virtual Outreach, a meeting with the White House National Security Council was held on May 12. Following the meeting, a memo was created outlining the business impact of visa processing delays across Europe. The memo calls for a quick solution on travel restrictions from Europe, a review of current status of visa processing at U.S. Embassies across Europe and to provide consular offices with the necessary resources to process visa applications in a timely manner. Campaign “Trust Science” held by Latvijas Finieris

At the beginning of 2021, Latvijas Finieris organized the campaign “Trust Science” by putting up posters in those areas of the Pardaugava neighborhood in Riga where it has its main manufacturing facilities. The posters show employees of the company with short slogans that call on people and the public to be responsible. The campaign also takes place in the Internet environment. Read more

As of June 15, the Grand Hotel Kempinski Riga has fully intensified the operation of Kempinski The Spa and restaurants - the Bar & Restaurant STAGE 22 and the restaurant AMBER in accordance with the current epidemiological safety measures in Latvia. How will Latvia adapt to new investors’ priorities?
|
|
According to the EY Baltics’ attractiveness report, last year the turbulence and uncertainty halted by COVID-19 caused foreign direct investment in Europe to fall 13%, at the same time Latvia managed to show growth of 79% compared to the year before. In addition, 69% of investors plan to establish or expand operations in 2021 in Latvia. The report also reveals that 56% of foreign investors will pay more attention to environmental sustainability in their future projects, while 52% will focus on reducing CO2 emissions and 47% on cleaner energy sources. FICIL highlights: Higher education reform adopted
|
|
On June 8 the Higher Education reform was adopted in the Saeima. AmCham along with FICIL has advocated for the necessity to improve the governance of higher education establishments and is pleased with the progress. Recently, FICIL published a study on the readiness of businesses and public administration for the European Green Deal where foreign investors and local companies outlined their approach to sustainability, cooperation among public and private sector to reach green targets and the upcoming challenges. FICIL's Annual High Council meeting will take place on September 16-17 and will focus on human capital, green economy development, digitalization, and rule of law. Read more
