In December 2019, the European Commission presented the European Green Deal - a roadmap for making the EU's economy sustainable. The roadmap's main policy objective is to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. Several national documents are passed to envisage a gradual transition to a low-carbon economy in Latvia.
The policy shift is an incentive for entrepreneurs to re-evaluate their assets and business strategies. Timely awareness of risks and new opportunities is important for business stability, maintaining profitability and adapting to the rules of the new game, including access to finance. Experts see significant risks for companies who fail to act. These include worsening reputation amongst key stakeholders such as investors and customers, physical and financial vulnerability to climate impacts, lack of access to capital/divestment, and reduced competitiveness against peers.
