A Latvian mountaineer begins journey to the South Pole in support to Ukraine

Jan 02

Latvian mountaineer and AmCham Latvia Founding member Juris Ulmanis is currently undertaking an expedition to ski to the geographical South Pole in Antarctica as part of his new initiative Sunflowers for Freedom. This mission is dedicated to raising awareness about the ongoing war in Ukraine and urging donations to support Ukrainian freedom fighters.

On January 3, Juris begins a challenging 16-day journey from latitude 89 to the South Pole, where he will deliver the Ukrainian flag. The journey through the glaciers symbolizes Ukraine's struggle, perseverance, and determination to overcome adversity. Juris, an officer in Latvia's National Guard and a university professor, seeks to highlight the courage of the Ukrainian people and remind the world of the urgent need to support them.

Donations for medical assistance to the people of Ukraine are being collected on the UNITED24 platform HERE
